Begins at the end of the 19th century, the development of in Indonesia started to be increased when several companies from the Netherlands in the field of tea factory and the sugar factory built the power plant for the purposes of its own.

Between the years 1942-1945 happened inbetween the management companies of the Netherlands by Japan, after the Netherlands surrendered to the army in Japan early in World War II.

The process of the transition of power back to occur at the end of World War II in August 1945, when Japan surrendered to the allies.

This opportunity is used by the youth and labour the Labour delegation through electrical/electrical and Gas Employees together with the leaders of the initiative that overlooks the center of KNI President Sukarno to hand these companies to the Government of the Republic of Indonesia. On October 27, 1945, Sukarno established the Bureau of electricity and Gas under the Ministry of public works and energy with hydroelectric capacity of 157,5 MW.

On January 1, 1961, the Bureau of electricity and Gas was changed into BPU-PLN (a common governing body State electricity company), which is engaged in the field of electricity, gas and Coke which was dissolved on January 1, 1965. At the same time, two (2) Electric Company Perusahaan Negara (PLN) as managers of State-owned electric power and Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) as a provider of gas was established.

In 1972, according to the Government Regulation No. 17, the status of the State electricity company (PLN) was established as a Public Company and as the holder of the State Electrical Power Business Ketenagalistrikan (PKUK) with the task of providing electric power for the common good.

In line with the Government policy that gives an opportunity to the private sector to move in the business of supplying electricity, then since 1994 status of Public Companies switch from PLN became the company's Company (Persero) as well as PKUK in providing electricity for public interest until now.
